To obtain fatty acids, soapstock is used, a by-product formed during the alkaline refining of vegetable oils. It contains an aqueous solution of soaps (products of neutralizing free fatty acids with alkali), oil, phosphorus compounds (phospholipids), coloring agents, mechanical impurities, etc.

Phosphatides or phospholipids, by-products of vegetable oil production, can serve as another source of NLC production.

• from co-stocks using water-alcohol media
